Sound familiar?

The features that make an app a real product are also the ones that are easiest to get wrong. Open database rules leak user data. Taking payments the wrong way gets an app rejected, because the stores have strict rules on how digital goods are sold. Notifications that annoy users get switched off, and an app that collects personal data without a plan creates UK GDPR problems. This course shows you how to build these features properly, with security and privacy designed in from the start.

What you'll build

A members app with email, Google and Apple sign-in, cloud data in Firestore with locked-down security rules, image uploads, push notifications, a subscription or one-off purchase, offline support, crash reporting and analytics with consent, plus a privacy policy and data map to go with it.

By the end you'll be able to

  • Choose an appropriate backend and connect a Flutter app to separate development and production Firebase projects.
  • Add email, Google and Apple sign-in with protected screens and in-app account deletion.
  • Model, query and sync data in Cloud Firestore and store user files in Cloud Storage.
  • Write and test security rules that keep each user's data private.
  • Send targeted push notifications and handle them correctly on Android and iOS.
  • Decide between in-app purchases and Stripe based on current store rules, and implement purchases and subscriptions reliably.
  • Keep an app usable offline and sync changes safely when the connection returns.
  • Add analytics and crash reporting with consent, and apply UK GDPR basics to the data your app collects.

Capstone project

Finish with something real

Build it on your own site, or a practice brief if you do not have one, and submit it for personal written feedback from George. Pass the capstone and the final exam to earn your certificate.

Who it's for

  • Part 2 graduates. you can build real apps and now want accounts, cloud data and payments.
  • Freelancers and agencies. clients are asking for apps with logins, memberships and notifications, and you want to build them safely.
  • Founders with an app idea. you want to build a working product with sign-in and payments, and understand what the store rules allow.
  • Web developers. you know server-side code and databases and want to see how mobile backends, push and in-app payments differ.

Who it's not for

  • Beginners. Take Flutter Parts 1 and 2 first.
  • Anyone wanting formal legal advice. We cover UK GDPR basics for app makers, not a substitute for a solicitor or data protection specialist.
  • Teams committed to a non-Firebase backend who want that backend covered in depth. We compare the options, but the hands-on work uses Firebase.

Why Firebase?

Firebase gives you sign-in, a real-time database, file storage, notifications, analytics and crash reporting in one place, with good Flutter support and a free tier for learning. We compare it with Supabase and building your own API, and the security and architecture lessons apply to whichever backend you choose.

Can I take payments with Stripe instead of in-app purchases?

It depends on what you are selling and where. Apple and Google have rules on digital goods and subscriptions that differ from the rules for physical goods and real-world services, and those rules change. We explain how to read the current guidelines and when each option is appropriate.

How does the 1:1 tutoring work?

You get 2 hours of live 1:1 time with George, a web and mobile app developer with over 10 years' experience. Book it in one block or in shorter sessions at any point during your 12 months, and use it for anything from setup problems to a review of your own app.

Will this cost me anything to run?

Firebase has a free tier that is enough for the course projects. Some features need a billing account to be enabled, and we show you how to set budget alerts. Testing in-app purchases on iOS needs an Apple Developer Program membership, which has an annual fee, so you can follow those lessons and complete them later if you prefer.

Does it cover UK GDPR?

Yes, at a practical level for app makers: what personal data you collect, lawful bases, consent for analytics, privacy policies, data requests and account deletion. It is not legal advice.

What if the course is not for me?

You have a 30-day money-back guarantee. We refund you in full, less the value of any 1:1 tutoring time you have already used.
