How To Kit Yourself Out As A Web Designer/Webmaster (And Why It’s Worth Doing)

Working as a web designer is a dream for a lot of geeky guys who love the idea of being able to work from home and kit themselves out with cool tech. If you work online, or if you want to, then it’s probably a safe bet to say that you’re a fan of technology and that you enjoy computers and the associated accoutrements – so you’re going to love having an excuse to buy the latest gadgets and devices.

But buying this tech isn’t just an extravagance. In fact, if you are serious about making a living online, then investing in some cool technology is a very smart decision and a great investment. Here we will look at why that is, and at how to spend your money wisely so that you have the very best and most useful stuff.

Why it’s a Good Call

First of all, if you’re debating whether or not you can justify purchasing the latest technology when an old netbook would do just fine, rest assured that it will be a good decision and that it will pay off. First of all, if you don’t have a device with a high resolution and a touch screen, then you won’t be experiencing your website the way that a lot of people do, and you won’t be able to ‘future proof it’ in order to ensure it looks good on the latest hardware.

Furthermore, if you own a more powerful computer setup, you’ll find you spend less time waiting for things to load up, and that you have more time free to create your products. You’ll also do this more speedily because your computer will be able to run better software and multitask better – trust me, it all makes a big difference.

More than anything though, having the latest technology will make you feel good about what you do. You’ll enjoy owning the latest computers and the latest devices, and as such you’ll find that you’re much more likely to find the motivation to use them and you’ll find that your output is better quality too. This can make all the difference in the way you work, and in the volume of what you put out.

Buying the Right Stuff

So what stuff should you kit yourself out with as a web developer or someone else who works online? Well first of all you need a great desk with lots of space for working – you should be able to write things down and take notes while switching back and forth from your computer. You should also have a powerful computer that is top of the range, and this should feature a high-resolution touchscreen. If you have chosen a slate computer, then using a digitiser pen you should be able to draw your artwork directly into the device. Failing this though, you may want to invest in a graphics tablet from a company such as Wacom – every web designer should have some way to draw into their device.

From there you should spend some time decorating your desk the way you want it, and investing in anything else that you think could help you to feel more like a boss at your desk. It’s not your fault if the equipment you need for work is so cool!
