Effective Email Subject Line To Increase Open Rate

Everyone who markets online is familiar with the old adage: the money is in the list. If you can get all of your customers gathered in one virtual place, waiting to read what you have to send them, then you’re near the pinnacle of online sales. You aren’t all the way there though. Convincing a lead to give you their email information is the easy part. Convincing them to open your mailings is another battle entirely. Fortunately, there are some simple things that you can do with your subject line to get more opens. Try these techniques out and watch your open rates soar!

Keep It Short, Leave Out Bad Words And Symbols

Before getting your email opened, there are two filters that you’re going to have to get past. The first is the spam filter that comes with whatever email service your customer is using. There are a set of common words and symbols that automatically set these triggers off. These include symbols like “$”, “!”, “&” and words like “all new”, “free offer”, and “offer”. Knowing what these words are and avoiding them will save you a lot of time and money.

Once you’re past the spam filters though you have another filter to get past: the human filter. We’ve been conditioned as a society to disregard certain subject lines that look like spam to us. To avoid this filter you need to avoid any kind of “gimmick” title.  Be upfront and concise and just tell you reader what they’re going to get inside the email.

Create A Sense Of Urgency

One of the hardest parts of email marketing is how short the shelf life of each piece is. You sometimes only have a few hours at most to get a customer to open your email before it falls off of the first page of their inbox, left to be glanced at and thrown in the trash weeks or months down the line. You can make sure that your email avoids this fate; but you have to create a sense of urgency with each of your emails. This means crafting your titles to convey that the information is time sensitive while avoiding spam keywords (e.g. “urgent”). It takes a bit of practice; but if you know your audience it is a lot easier than it seems.

Emulate What Already Works

A lot of email marketers are not copywriters, you have a lot of other things to handle when running your business. You don’t need to be an expert in crafting content to know what works though, you simply need to know where to find what already works. To learn the types of subject lines that work well, simply seek out content aggregate sites on the web and see what works. Reddit is the place to look right now. Take a look at the post titles that are hitting page one to see what is worth clicking on to the Internet at large. For niche specific ideas, subscribe to as many lists in your niche as possible and see what they’re doing. You can get some great ideas from your competition.

Writing great email subject lines takes a bit of practice; but it is a skill that is worth building. Upping your email open rate is a surefire way to bring in more sales without having to seriously tweak your sales funnel. So put the following information to use today. You’ll like what you see.
